How yoga and surfing can actually help you live a happier, healthier life?

If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to peel yourself away from the digital world and reclaim your brain and body, it might be time to consider the killer combo of yoga and surfing.

Do you know that a good day on the surf is a sure-fire way to keep in shape and get those endorphins cranking. But did you know that yoga, in addition to helping you become more bendy, boasts a heap of physical and mental health benefits?

Yoga’s been shown to reduce stress and improve symptoms of depression, hyperactivity and attention deficit disorder. It can even help produce more of the chemicals in your brain that help fight anxiety. And in these anxious, smartphone-ridden times (by the way, did you know that your smartphone is making you tired and anxious?), we’ll take all of the above, thanks.

Yoga and surfing go together like sand and saltwater. Both disciplines tap into a natural flow. Yoga gets you in touch with the rhythm of your breath and body, while surfing gets you in sync with the wave patterns and ocean tides. In yoga, you learn not to force any pose, but to find the depth of the pose in the moment. In surfing, you learn that you can’t force a wave or a set. Instead, you practice being fully in the moment and in tune with the current so you can catch a wave.

Yoga works so perfectly with surfing because it teaches you to channel your breath, energy and thoughts in a healthy way. Nikki Van Dijk.
