Recently, we transitioned from an El Niño period to La Niña after a long and atypical stretch under El Niño. Now that La Niña has departed, we are entering a new phase of El Niño again, but with one of the most intense months I've experienced in Nicaragua, at Miramar, and Central America, perhaps even globally.
Normally, rainfall in Nicaragua, especially in the Miramar Surf Camp region, is infrequent and rare this time of the year. However, this June brought unprecedented levels of water and storms, one after another. Strong winds and mini-hurricanes persisted throughout the month, prompting safety advisories and suspending boat trips.
For a surf trip, it was challenging to navigate through constant rains and onshore winds, particularly in Nicaragua where we anticipate ideal offshore winds and abundant barrel waves. Nonetheless, this month was particularly frustrating due to the excessive rainfall.
One thing is certain, Puerto Sandino wave thrives when the river is full, shaping the sandbanks. Following these storms, we always find calm and reward. The sandbanks at Puerto Sandino haven't been optimal in recent months, but I believe after this exceptionally turbulent month, they will return to their prime state. I'm confident that Nicaragua, Miramar, and all of Central America will bounce back stronger after this period, with intensified southern swells and non-stop good waves. While not an expert, I always believe paradise awaits after the storm.
Nevertheless, amidst these storms, Miramar Surf Camp delivers without fail. We consistently find ways to catch the best waves at the perfect moments. Even amid this deluge, we managed to find numerous barrels and plenty of good, perfect waves.
